Chat on WeChat Without Knowing Chinese
WeChat includes built-in translation for messages, voice notes, and signs. Use these tools to communicate clearly without learning Mandarin.
Translate incoming text messages
You can translate a message in place without switching apps.
- Long-press a message bubble and tap Translate
- The translated text appears right under the original
- Long-press again to switch back to the original
Write-and-translate your replies
WeChat can translate your English as you type so your friend receives Chinese directly.
- Long-press the input box and select Translate
- Type in English and preview the Chinese translation
- Send the translated version directly
Convert voice notes
Voice messages are common in China. Convert them to text and then translate.
- Long-press the voice message and choose Convert to Text
- Long-press the transcribed Chinese text and tap Translate
Translate Moments and articles
You can translate captions and comments in Moments the same way you translate a chat message.
Translation tips
Simple sentences translate best. Use these habits for clearer results.
- Use short Subject-Verb-Object sentences
- Avoid slang or idioms
- Use Scan > Translate to read menus and signs
