How to Register WeChat Pay as a Foreigner
Foreign visitors can use WeChat Pay by linking an international credit or debit card. Follow these steps to register, verify, and pay in China.
Quick tips
- Transactions of 200 RMB or less are usually fee-free.
- Some features like Red Packets still require a Chinese bank account.
- Set up Alipay as a backup payment option.
Download and register WeChat
Start with the basics: install WeChat and register with your international phone number.
- Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play.
- Register using your international mobile number.
- Complete the security verification prompts.
Verify identity and link a card
Open WeChat and go to Me > Services > Wallet to access WeChat Pay.
If you do not see Services, enable WeChat Pay in Settings > General > Tools.
- Tap Cards, then Add a Bank Card.
- Enter passport or permanent resident ID details and upload the requested photos.
- Add your Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card details.
- Confirm with the OTP sent by your bank.
Use WeChat Pay in China
WeChat Pay works for everyday purchases at shops, restaurants, and taxis.
- Tap + > Scan to scan a merchant QR code
- Use Money to show your QR code for merchants to scan
- Transactions over 200 RMB may incur a 3% fee
- Typical limits: 6,000 RMB per transaction, 50,000 RMB monthly, 60,000 RMB annually
Important tips
Linking an international card allows merchant payments, but some features remain restricted without a Chinese bank account.
- Cannot send Red Packets or transfer money to individuals
- Cannot top up WeChat Balance with a foreign card
- Carry a backup payment method just in case
